camping

Three campgrounds provide the opportunity to sleep in the badlands under the stars. A Wilderness Camping Permit is required for all overnight camping. Learn more about Permit fees and Season dates here.

kayaking

Enjoy the crackling of a campfire and sleep under the stars. With 13 campgrounds and 1,009 sites to choose from, options are plentiful.

activities for children

Activities include a variety of ranger-led programs, from easy walks and evening talks, to longer hikes and more.

cross country skiing & snow shoeing

There is fun to be had when the snow flies in winter. See trail recommendations and check conditions.

Make a splash with the entire family by bringing them to the 4 Bears Water Park. Water slides and splash pad? We got ‘em. A lazy river and sun deck for the parents? You bet. And with the toddler area, wildflower green spaces and concession stand, get ready for a full day of summer fun.

9 hole golf course located just west of New Town, ND. Opened in 1978.


4 bears casino & Lodge

4 Bears Casino, just west of New Town, ND, is North Dakota’s winning destination for gaming, live entertainment, dining, lodging and conventions. Located on beautiful Lake Sakakawea, 4 Bears offers marina and lake access.


THree Affiliated Tribes MUSEUM

The TAT Museum is a heritage center honoring the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara tribes who once dominated the Great Plains. Located in New Town, North Dakota, the museum sits near the Missouri River and the location where Lewis and Clark passed through in the spring of 1805 after wintering at Fort Mandan. The information and geographical knowledge provided by the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Tribes were essential to the survival of the Corps of Discovery.  


Crow flies high state recreation area

This scenic overlook just west of New Town provides views of Four Bears Bridge and Lake Sakakawea. During periods of low water, glimpses can be seen of the town of Sanish, now covered by Lake Sakakawea.

Theodore Roosevelt National Park
Theodore Roosevelt came to Dakota Territory to hunt bison in 1883. Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site
Native Americans occupied this area for more than 11,000 years. There are remains of three Hidatsa villages with 210 depressions at the site. Home of Sakakawea, a modern museum, visitor center and movies.
